Gopnik on Maelzel's Master

In "Chess and 18th Century Artificial Intelligence," the critic Adam Gopnik offers some interesting reflections on what the absence of true mastery in Maelzel's chessplayer (a.k.a. "The Turk") can teach us about the potential emptiness in absolute mastery.  However, I think Magnus Carlsen -- who is performing brilliantly in the Candidates tournament -- offers something of a refutation to his argument.
